Only confirmed events are pinned. Everything else is a menu—pick by weather, energy and how ambitious breakfast feels.
Pick by mood
Drive times are approximate from the chalet. Trail conditions and summer lift schedules can change—check the linked source the morning you go.
Stack the easy roadside hits: Screw Auger Falls, Moose Cave and Mother Walker Falls. Add Table Rock only if the group wants a real climb.
A classic natural swimming hole with a small cascade—beautiful, cold and slippery. Go earlier in the day and keep an eye on water levels.
A short forest trail beside wide granite cascades and pools. It feels adventurous without claiming an entire day.
Check the summer calendar for scenic lift rides, disc golf, hiking and events. Easy to pair with the covered bridge and lunch.
Small-town surprise: Maine geology, gems and one of the world’s major meteorite collections. Excellent rainy-day insurance.
The Artist’s Covered Bridge is an easy photo stop. Pair it with Frenchman’s Hole, Sunday River or a slow scenic drive.
A gentle riverside walk and bike route near town. Ideal after breakfast or when the group wants fresh air without a production.
Coffee on the porch. Games. Sauna. A long lunch. Let the kids disappear into chalet mode. This is a real plan, not a fallback.
Gem museum → lunch in Bethel → board games and a grocery-store dessert draft back at the house.
Boots on
Trail mileage is round trip. House distances and drive times are intentionally rough; mountain traffic, parking and road conditions can add time.
A paved riverside walk beginning at Davis Park. The easiest option for a morning stroll, bikes or a mixed-energy group.
A satisfying local loop with ledges and views over Bethel and the Androscoggin River—enough climb to feel earned without taking all day.
A short woodland trail following broad granite cascades and pools. Expect roots, wet rock and plenty of reasons to stop.
The best effort-to-view ratio in Grafton Notch. Take the gentler Appalachian Trail route with less-experienced hikers; the orange route is steep and boulder-strewn.
A short but serious climb using steel rungs and ladders to reach a dramatic overlook. Skip it in wet weather and with small children.
The ambitious full-day option: sustained Appalachian Trail climbing to an observation tower and huge western Maine views.
Eat + drink
August can be busy and western Maine hours can be quirky. Call ahead for a big group and verify the day’s hours.
Colorful, creative comfort food with Southeast Asian and Latin influence. Best “special dinner” pick.
Burgers, lobster rolls and serious fries. Easy crowd-pleaser for a mixed-age group.
Coffee, pastry and a relaxed breakfast/lunch stop in town.
Korean and Japanese dishes in a warm dining room. Good option when the group wants something beyond pub fare.
Local beer, casual food and a lively Bethel atmosphere. Check the current food and music calendar.
A classic downstairs pub for pizza, burgers, beer and a low-fuss group dinner.
Sandwiches, prepared food and useful house provisions. Smart first-day or picnic stop.
Roadside barbecue and a fun casual lunch near Sunday River Road.
Monday on the coast
From the house: roughly 95 miles / 2 hr 10 min each way. Cap’n Fish’s Whale Watch & Puffin Combo Cruise departs from 42 Commercial Street in Boothbay Harbor. Allow extra time for summer traffic and arrive in the area one hour early for paid waterfront parking and check-in.
Keep it close to the harbor and don’t overdo it before four hours offshore. Boothbay Lobster Wharf is the classic working-waterfront move.
The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens are exceptional, but they deserve 2–3 hours. Use them only with a very early Bethel departure or on a separate coast day.
Warm layer, rain shell, hat, sunscreen, binoculars, water and non-drowsy motion-sickness treatment taken early. It is much colder offshore.
Before you go
Cap’n Fish’s recommends reaching Boothbay Harbor one hour early. The closest option is paid Waterfront Parking at 42 Commercial Street.
Cell coverage gets thin in Grafton Notch. Download the Bethel-to-Grafton area before a hiking day and screenshot the trail map.
Bring layers and a rain shell even on a warm day. Add sunscreen, binoculars and motion-sickness medicine taken before boarding.

Avis timing needs a quick fix. The reservation says pickup at noon, but the flight reaches PWM at 2:31pm. Add the United flight details or move pickup to about 3:00pm. The listed noon return also conflicts with the 7:00am flight home.
Away Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon.
*Both listed times conflict with the flight schedule. Verify before departure.
